Type

Headings are set in Brygada 1918, text in Literata, figures and dates in IBM Plex Mono, and the bar-and-dot numerals in Noto Sans Mayan Numerals. All four are under the SIL Open Font License and are served from this site.

Palette

A plaster ground, hematite for the rules and frame, Maya blue for links. The two washes sit only behind day signs and month glyphs, which is how the codices paint them.

The patron

The figure in the margin is K'awiil, a Maya god of lightning and lineage.

Dates

The date on the cover is today's, worked out in your browser from your own clock; without JavaScript it shows the day the site was built. Every other date on the site is converted at build time from the page's own record. Both use the same code: a Long Count and a Calendar Round, with the GMT correlation (584283). A date that only gives its year or month is counted from the first day of that year or month. The conversion is checked against known dates, among them the end of the thirteenth bak'tun on 21 December 2012 (13.0.0.0.0 4 Ajaw 3 K'ank'in), the start of bak'tun 9 in 435 (8 Ajaw 13 Keh) and of bak'tun 10 in 830 (7 Ajaw 18 Sip).

The count starts on 11 August 3114 BCE, the day 4 Ajaw 8 Kumk'u. Quirigua Stela C records it; the stela writes the first place as 13 where the arithmetic gives 0.

Numerals

A dot is one, a bar is five, the shell is zero. The leaf numbers and every number in a date use them.

Words

Each section and leaf carries one Classic Mayan word from a vocabulary list, in the spelling of Kettunen & Helmke. Where a licensed drawing of the word's glyphs exists, it sits beside the word: pa-ta for pat- on Projects, pi-tz(i) for pitz on Gaming. The site does not compose Mayan sentences.

Pat- is a verb root, so it keeps the hyphen the sources use. Boot also lists an unrelated noun pat, "back" (Boot p. 151).

Glyph credits

This table covers the calendar and word glyphs: the day signs, months, period glyphs, the Quirigua drawing and the word glyphs. They come from Wikimedia Commons. The CC BY-SA drawings are recoloured and some are cropped by the page, so they stay under their licence; each page's footer names the authors of the drawings it shows. The patron figure is not part of this table.

Leaves

Leaf numbers are given out when the site is built, in reading order. A new page moves everything after it along, and the cross-references follow.

Each page is also filed the way epigraphers cite a page of a Maya codex: the book, the page, then the register on the page, counted from the top. Boot gives the kakaw spelling as Dresden 10B-1, the Dresden Codex, page 10, register B. Here the book is Flores, the page is the leaf that lists the entry, and the letter is the entry's line on that leaf. Bar Flores is Flores 2A, the first line on leaf 2. The leaf number is written in bar-and-dot.
